The colored and varied history of Malvan runs from 6th to 8th century AD when Chalukyas had carried forward the administration of this region. With the series of rulers that followed as they ruled the town, it had greatly flourished during the reign of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj of Maratha kingdom. Shivaji Maharaj began the construction of Sindhudurg fort in 1664, that had been completed in 1667.
